Alps Treks & Hikes Custom Trips

Alps / Italy + Switzerland + Austria + France + Germany

Our custom trips and private guiding are the perfect fit for any group looking for help turning their hiking dreams into reality. You may already have a certain route, hike, or destination in mind, or you can simply tell us the ingredients of your perfect trip and we will gladly prepare a customized itinerary at no cost or obligation.

We have over 30 years of experience guiding in the Alps. Our Director and Head Guide, Jorg Wilz, grew up in Heidelberg, Germany and has been mountaineering and skiing in the Alps since early childhood. He became internationally certified as a mountain and ski guide (UIAGM / IFMGA) by the Technical University of Munich in 1986 and has split his time guiding in Europe and Canada ever since. His local knowledge of the Alps and network of talented hiking and mountain guides means we know the best places to go hiking and when to go there. We can show you our favourite hotels, B&Bs, and mountain huts. Our customized trips can be as simple as a guided day hike or multi-component including transportation, lodging, multiple days of guiding, mealplan, equipment rental, and much more. We can put together any kind of trip for you – from straight-forward hikes to demanding treks that may involve some via ferrata sections (i.e. cable and rung-protected sections). You can choose whether you want no lodging included, a hut-to-hut experience, or whether you’d rather base out of one or two villages and make day hikes from there. Prefer to hike on your own? We offer self- guided options as well (check out our Dolomites treks and Tour du Mont Blanc for inspiration). You can choose guided or self-guided trips.

Detail and Logistics

Need Ideas? We can help with that.

Location, Location, Location

Popular valley-based locations for the start of many multi-day and single treks include:

Chamonix, France – a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts. Easily accessed from Geneva airport.
Neustift, Austria – on the Austrian/Italian border, home to stunning hike alpine lakes. Close to Innsbruck and Munich airports.
Cortina D’ampezzo, Italy – based in the Dolomites and famous for its amazing network of huts. Close to Venice airport.
Zermatt, Switzerland – most known for the Matterhorn. A train ride away from the Geneva airport.
Provence, France – mix culture and hiking in this stunning Mediterranean region. Accessible by the Marseille and Lyon airports.

Have a specific interest? Private hut lodging, quieter trails, WW1 history, kid-friendly, beautiful lakes, high-elevation huts, huts on mountain summits… We can work with your preferences to design an itinerary and take pressure off your shoulders!

Seeking more adventure?

We get it, hiking is awesome, but what if we took it up a notch? Add a day of guided via ferrata (cable and rung-assisted trails requiring the use of a via ferrata clip in set, harness, and helmet).

Customize It

We can provide you with a quote for a custom package that includes any or all of the following:

  • Hiking Guide + guide expenses
  • Valley-based hotel lodging with ensuite bathrooms and breakfast
  • Mountain hut or mountain lodge accommodation in either private rooms, small shared rooms, or dorm rooms. Halfboard (dinner and breakfast) mealplan included
  • Airport transportation
  • Transportation (via private taxi, with guide, or bus) during trek
  • Luggage transfer (only available in some locations)
  • Via ferrata equipment rental (via ferrata clip-in set, locking carabiners, harness, helmet)

The options are endless.

The beauty of custom hiking treks is in its total flexibility. We can make adjustments along the way, even when you are already in the mountains.

FAQ

Do I need to sign a Release of Liability & Assumption of Risk Agreement (a.ka. liability waiver)?

Our overall experience with OnTop was excellent. The trip organization and communication were smooth and professional from the start. Emails were clear, responses came quickly, and every logistical detail was covered before we even asked. It really gave us confidence heading into the trip. The itinerary was well thought out, a perfect balance between adventure, scenic variety, and downtime. Each day felt purposeful without being rushed, and there was enough flexibility to make little detours or linger at favorite spots. The GPX files and PDF maps were accurate and easy to follow. Even in more remote sections, navigation was simple. Having both formats was a nice touch. We used the GPX tracks on our devices but appreciated the printed maps for quick reference and overview planning. Lodging and meals were great overall. The accommodations were comfortable, clean, and well located. Food portions were generous after long days on the trail, and the quality ranged from good to outstanding. We especially appreciated the local touches at smaller inns. Based on this experience, I’d rate my likelihood of recommending OnTop to friends a 10 out of 10. It’s a very well-run operation, and I’d happily travel with them again.

My friend and I did a self guided trek of the Tour du Mont Blanc this Aug/Sept organized by OnTop Mountaineering and they did an amazing job! They booked all of our accommodations (which were amazing), made daily detailed routes (including alternate routes for easier/harder options), sent GPX files for use while out of service and gave a huge amount of details on what to expect/pack. We met many other travellers on our hike who booked through other companies and we certainly had better maps, accommodations and trail details! I will use OnTop again for any local or Euro adventures!

We used On Top Mountaineering for our 20th anniversary trek. We had a 4 day itinerary and spoke with their representative Jessica about our preferences. She was so very meticulous in helping us determine the perfect itinerary for the 4 days. We also had a via ferrata guide that was absolutely fantastic and knowledgeable on the climb and the history of the area. Every single little detail of the trip was perfectly planned with no hiccups whatsoever. We highly recommend the services for the price we paid!

We had a wonderful trip with OnTop Mountain Guides this July when we did a 4 day/3 night hut-to-hut from Zermatt. Our guide, Nicola, was friendly, knowledgeable, and most importantly, attentive to all of our needs. He adjusted to our pace, changes in itinerary, and helped navigate our dietary needs in the huts. He did this always with good cheer and warmth. We were lucky to have mostly great weather with wonderful views of the Matterhorn and other scenery. Prior to the actual trip the OnTop staff was super helpful reviewing options, booking the huts, and adjusting when our schedule changed. This is our second trip with OnTop (Via Ferrata in the Dolomites a few years ago) and we cannot recommend them highly enough!

We had a fantastic two day rock climbing trip in the Dolomites. Jess from OnTop was a great communicator and our guide Gabriele was 10/10. We were safe & relaxed with his expertise and he gave us good critique in a respectful way so we improved. Well worth the money! Thank you

We had a wonderful ski trip in the Tyrolian Alps (Silvretta traverse)! Andreas is an amazing guide. He is very knowledgeable, has immense mountain experience, is very safe in every decision he makes. He made us feel comfortable to express our opinion regarding itineraries, etc. He was very flexible and adapted to the group’s needs easily. I would definitely recommend him as a guide! Excellent communication from OnTop Mountaineering, very responsive. The itinerary is excellent, 6-8 hours on skis per day. Amazing views every day! Would definitely recommend ski crampons for spring traverses. Excellent Tyrolian cuisine at the huts, lodging was comfortable, hut employees very helpful and friendly. 10/10 would recommend this trip to friends (we already did!).
